Extradited for Owing a Casino Marker in Nevada!

EXTRADITION from one state to another is one of the worst things that can happen to somebody involved in a casino marker dispute with a Las Vegas or Nevada Casino.

What most people think when they hear the word “extradition” is they will be taken to court, ordered by the court to be transported on a plane handcuffed to a seat or to an official like a police officer or marshal and comfortably flown to the jurisdiction where court is waiting for them to adjudicate their case. Nothing could be further from the truth.

In reality, extradition is a “medieval” process which each state handles differently.  Nevada counties, including Clark County, employ private extradition companies that get paid by how many inmates trips they can make using old style windowless panel vans. These private companies pick up a prisoner who may have waited one or two weeks sitting in a county jail before they are finally transported. Inside each van there are two bench seats along each side and sometimes there are even individual cages. On the floor of each van there are steel rings. Connected to these rings are chains leading to each inmate’s feet and wrists.

To maximize profits, extradition companies employ a system that increases the amount of “inmate trips.” For example, a person being extradited from Miami to Las Vegas will not experience a 3 or 4 day trip by the shortest route. Instead, the van might first travel from Miami to Chicago, picking up and dropping off inmates all along the way, which makes for a very roundabout trip to Chicago. Next may be a detour South through Dallas, then up to Denver, then further North to Seattle, Down to LA, before arriving in Las Vegas. East Coast to Las Vegas extraditions have been known to take up to 3 weeks, with every night spent sleeping in a different county jail along the way. Lunch is handled by giving each prisoner a $3.50 lunch stipend. The van will pull up to a fast food drive through and each inmate can order $3.50 worth of food, which is eaten in the back of the van still in chains shackled to the floor.

Extradition is something you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy.

(The above description of the extradition process was taken from interviews with persons who have experienced it firsthand)
